Accept-Independence

Accept your independence and use it wisely

accept your independence

Sometimes the fortunes we find inside cookies can be very spot on. Take, for example, the fortune which says “Accept your independence and use it wisely”.

We value independence. From an early age we want to be independent and we look up to those who are. Those people that we looked up to? They went on to lead. They knew how to use their independence wisely.

What is leadership?

We all have different definitions of what leadership is; but for the most part, we can agree leadership is the ability to get people to follow you.

Strong leaders know how to be independent.

Leaders can make a difference; they just can’t do it on their own. They need the support from those around them, as we all do. We all have followers; we all have leaders. That said, a strong leader knows how to be independent. They are dependent upon themselves. They know how to think for themselves and how to stand up for themselves.

Today, companies are looking for those who can think on their feet, independently. They want people who have the leadership qualities to make their organizations successful, without having to second guess themselves. These companies need leaders who can make decisions on their own and move forward with it, confidently.

Do you know how to be independent? Do you know how to use your independence wisely?

Emerging Leadership Coaching can help.

What is an Emerging Leader?

Emerging Leaders are those that have the technical capabilities for larger roles in their organization but they often lack the leadership capabilities for future success. They are not sure how to use their independence.

While a fortune cookie can provide you with the leadership skills and abilities you need to become an effective leader, they can often push you in the right direction to make a change. That change could make you the effective leader you know you can be.

Adventurous Spirit

Your adventurous spirit will lead you on a fulfilling path

adventurous spirit

Fortune cookie advice can sometimes be vague, or even hilarious; but sometimes, every once in a while, you get a nugget of wisdom in your cookie. For example, if you were to receive a fortune reading “Your adventurous spirit will lead you on a fulfilling path” that’s advice you might want to follow.

Why? Because effective leaders have a sense of adventure.

An Adventurous Spirit

The best leaders I have worked with have had a sense of adventure. They are always looking forward to the journey that their organization is going on, the journey their business is going on, or the journey their team is going on. Effective leaders are excited to get their teams excited about the adventure that lies ahead.

The spirit of adventure has been a part of every great leader in history. These leaders have never been afraid to try something new.

To succeed in life and lead others, you must develop and maintain an adventurous attitude. Don’t worry, even if you don’t feel you’ve got that spirit, it’s one you can learn.

Adventures in Career Development

Great leaders take risks to learn new things. Do you join new projects, just to find out what they are all about? Do you have a sense of enthusiasm about what lies ahead? Have you examined your career horizons lately? If not, consider Career Coaching. With Career Coaching, Lead Coach Mentor will help you examine your horizons and see what’s out there. Take a chance!

We can help you develop a personal plan and help you execute the steps needed to make a change.

Adventure-Within

Adventure is not outside, it is within

File_002

While George Eliot may have said it first (and she actually said “Adventure is not outside man, it is within”) this fortune cookie does the quote justice.

We truly must look inside first to find adventure before we go ‘outside’ to find it. While an effective leader is adventurous, you don’t have to jump off a cliff or skydive to be adventurous. You simply need to go inside yourself to find your courage.

Go Inside

So, how exactly how does one ‘go inside’ oneself? Deepak Chopra was once asked this very question, and he had some excellent advice to give.

According to Chopra, when you go inside yourself, a number of mysteries about your personal growth will be solved.

Spiritual Growth is Important

As Chopra points out, all great leaders know there is another level to the mind, the one we reach when we truly experience silence (in other words, meditation). When you experience this type of silence, your mind, your thoughts, begin to shift.

Effective Leaders and Mindfulness

Effective leaders meditate. Steve Jobs meditates. Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn meditates. They know that sitting still for a little while, and being quiet, brings with it a number of important benefits.

Lao Tzu once asked “Do you have the patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving till the right action arises by itself?”

Today we are always only partly present. We multi-task. We’re connecting via cyberspace while we’re also connecting in the real world, so everyone gets only a piece of our attention. Meditation can help put the brakes on all of this commotion.

The term ‘mindfulness’ has been used a lot lately. Mindfulness, by definition, means: maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment

It’s not just about stillness or silence, but about changing our attitudes towards the way we deal with, and see, problems. Not only can being mindful keep you sane in a crazy world (it helps to ease stress) but it can also help you think more organized thoughts. When you get your house in order, so to speak, you can allow new insights to come.

And if you’re afraid you’ll never be able to sit still and meditate, know that yoga is a moving meditation. Take up yoga, or simply try sitting still in a quiet room for a few minutes and see how that goes!

What are your strengths? Is meditation one of them? Are you able to organize your thoughts and focus on new insights? At Lead Coach Mentor we offer Strengths Coaching which is all about focusing on what you do well, rather than on your weakness. We help you discover what you do best, and build upon that.

Profitable Transaction

You will have a chance soon to make a profitable transaction

profitable transaction

Fortune cookies may not provide us with advice we should necessarily follow, but they often give us a jumping off point. Those fortunes can spark a good idea and send us off in a new direction. Take, for example, “You will have a chance soon to make a profitable transaction”.

This fortune could mean a variety of things…are you coming into money? Are you going to meet someone new who will provide you with beneficial contacts? A profitable transaction could be anything. And the fortune says ‘a chance’? Will you take that chance? Will you realize it when it presents itself, or will you let opportunity knock and ignore it?

Recognizing Opportunity

One of the first steps to becoming an effective leader is learning how to recognize opportunity when it knocks. Opportunity recognition is part of being an innovator. Leaders are expected to be able to recognize ideas that are transformative. That ‘A ha!’ moment, that moment of inspiration, is a skill that can be learned.

When offered a new job or a new opportunity do you know how to evaluate it? Your evaluation skills are key to moving ahead. You can get better at spotting those profitable opportunities.

New Ideas

When new ideas are presented to you, they may not be perfect. If you see those imperfections don’t automatically assume this opportunity is not for you. Be keen enough to see the imperfections and smart enough to remember those imperfections don’t define the opportunity. Find that profitable opportunity in spite of the imperfections.

And look for the next big idea. Leaders know to think big, and they don’t worry about the obstacles that may stand in the way between inception and completion. They may not know, right off the bat, how to overcome all of those obstacles, but they are thinking ahead, looking for answers.

Leaders Learn from Failure

Sure, you’ve taken risks before that didn’t pan out. But failed attempts at an idea are not the definition failure. Actually most great opportunities weren’t realized on the first attempt. It usually takes rounds of failure before an idea is ever perfected and executed. Look at the causes of the preceding failures to learn how to fix them and succeed.

The Future

Remember, the opportunity presented to you today may be the next big innovation of tomorrow. And timing really can be everything. Maybe an idea you had in the past, one that never came to fruition, simply needed today’s technology to take off. Examine some of those ‘failed’ ideas and see if they can become profitable opportunities today. That fortune cookie just might be on to something!

Mentoring Programs

Are you a leader who sees the next big idea for what it is? Are there others in your organization who need a little help seeing those profitable opportunities? If so, why not start a mentoring program in your company? Mentoring programs increase retention, improve employee satisfaction, and may just help your bottom line! Who knows what opportunities your mentees may add to the mix!

Giving through Mentoring

Your Giving Soul Will Soon Be Rewarded

giving soul

Giving through Mentoring.  A generous person prospers. It’s karma, right? When your fortune cookie says, ‘Your giving soul will soon be rewarded’, that seems like a fortune you can believe in. There are so many ways to give, too. You can, of course, give monetarily, but you can also give of yourself. When you give by developing others, you grow. That’s rewarding.

Giving by Developing Others: Mentor

When you mentor someone, when you advise or train someone, providing them with your guidance, you grow as a person. When you teach, you learn. According to the Learning Pyramid, which was developed in the 1960s by the National Training Laboratories Institute, you retain 90% of what you know simply by reteaching that information. By mentoring.

When you mentor, you learn by giving, by teaching. Your mentee learns, and you grow as a person.

Mentoring Programs

A mentoring program is a development tool designed to connect emerging leaders with successful leaders within your organization.

  • Mentors act as trusted advisors, knowledgeable leaders and teachers, and wise counselors.
  • Mentors provide guidance, giving advice and experience to their mentees.
  • The mentees in your organization gain training and career counseling while mentors gain education themselves, growing as leaders.

Mentoring Programs

Mentoring programs are low-risk tools that rely on the strength of your leaders, while they develop your emerging leaders.

These programs not only improve employee satisfaction, they also increase employee retention, making everyone in your organization happier. They help build future leaders and increase collaboration among your staff.

Lead Coach Mentor can help you develop a mentoring culture in your organization.

Becoming a mentor, or establishing a mentoring program within your company, is a way to give back. You’ll see, your giving soul will soon be rewarded once you give of yourself. Impart your knowledge and experience to others and get it back tenfold.

Contact Lead Coach Mentor today and find out how we can work together to improve your employees’ satisfaction!

Gift from Nature

A Gift from Nature Will Soon Be Coming Your Way

gift from nature

While we all tend to read the fortunes from our Fortune Cookies and laugh, sometimes a Fortune Cookie can open our eyes. While the fortune may not tell us the future, it can spark something that helps change our lives…

Take, for example the fortune that reads, ‘A Gift from Nature Will Soon Be Coming Your Way’.

A gift from nature can be so many things. A new puppy? Flowers blooming in your garden? A soothing walk in the park? It could be something as small as the sounds of the birds…

Nature’s gift can be as simple as giving us an appreciation for the little things in life.

My gift from nature gave me a bit of calm on a crazy day, and now leads to me to look for tranquility on days when I need it most.

I facilitate a personal leadership class, and because I would never ask my participants to do something I wouldn’t do, I typically do the same things over the break that they do.

One thing I ask program participants to do is to track the things they appreciate.  So, after a long day of work and grueling commute home I decided to go sit on the back porch and think about what I had to appreciate about the day.  I was sitting there journaling about my appreciation, noticing how still and calm it was outside, when out of the blue two birds started chirping and talking to each other.  Those birds chattered on and on, and it was such a delight to hear.

That experience gave me a newfound appreciation of two simple things I hadn’t thought to appreciate before: finding a calm spot in a crazy day, and the gorgeous music the birds were singing to me.

I’ve learned now to listen for the joyous sounds of birds and to delight in the calm whenever I can; both true gifts from nature.

Finding Your Calm

Happiness

Happiness Comes with a New Friend

File_003-2

Imagine opening your Fortune Cookie and reading, “Happiness comes with a new friend.” What would you think? A romantic relationship was on the way? A new co-worker might become a close friend? Maybe yourself as a friend?

Get happy with yourself first!

Let’s start with you as your friend? Often when we are happy with the direction of our life, career etc, we are happy with ourselves – we are our own friend.  Coaching is an awesome option  (I think the best option) for career pathing & development planning. When you are not happy with yourself, in my opinion it is harder to be happy with others.

Connecting with Others

You might meet a new friend at work, at the gym, by joining a book club, or even on social media (a friend of a friend, perhaps). New people come into our lives all the time, but as we get older it seems that making friends is more difficult. Most new people we meet are through work. Those people are ones we may have a lot in common with (similar interest in the work, similar educational background, and so on) and ones we share a number of hours with each day.

Mentoring Programs

One way to make new friends at work is through mentoring. Reaching out to others, giving of yourself, is a way to make yourself happy, and make someone else happy. Maybe their fortune cookie said the same thing?

Or, perhaps you own a company and see potential among your employees; you see emerging leaders who you could connect with the successful leaders in your organization. Establishing a mentoring program could lead to some great friendships, and to some effective collaboration.

Strengths Coaching

Another way Lead Coach Mentor could facilitate new friendships in your life is through Strengths Coaching. Strengths Coaching can help you focus on your strengths; this can help you feel more confident at work, and can lead to new friendships or partnerships. Becoming more effective at work can propel you up the ladder. Reach your goals and happiness will follow.

Meet Lead Coach Mentor

Let us help you make those new friendships; whether it be through a mentoring program that we help you organize or through Strengths Coaching where we help you develop your people strengths & your confidence.

Contact us today and let’s talk! Remember, happiness comes with a new friend!

Acquaintance to Friend

An Acquaintance Will Soon Become a Lifelong Friend

Acquaintance

Fortune cookies provide a wide range of ‘fortunes’ from good advice to silly sayings. If you opened up your fortune cookie today and read ‘An Acquaintance Will Soon Become a Lifelong Friend’ would you know just exactly who the fortune was referring to?

Maybe a colleague at work, someone you just talk to at the gym? Even though they are simply acquaintances, everyone we interact with on a daily basis is important in our lives. They enrich our lives in so many ways.

Consider trying to turn an acquaintance into a friend. It may take time and effort; but if you want to make a lifelong friend, you need to do the work.

Making Friends

As we get older, it really is harder to make those connections. Make sure that you are approachable; if you have to, fake it! Practice will make you warmer and more approachable, don’t worry!

Be generous; offer to do favors for others. Look for ways to help others at work, grab coffee for them, pitch in, share information.

And never keep score. Don’t keep track of who contacted who last. It’s difficult on both sides to initiate new friendships. Even if you called, texted or emailed last, if you want to reach out, do it! It’s always nice to be asked to do something, and that goes both ways. And if you do ask someone to do something, be reliable. If you say you can do something, do it.

Be interested in your friend’s conversation. Pay attention. Smile, make eye contact, nod. Let people know that you are someone who can listen; don’t talk about yourself until you have the floor.

Show them you care. If someone’s been out sick, ask how they are. Call them. Email them, facebook them. Stay in touch!

Who Gets Credit

When you don’t care who gets the credit, there is no limit to how high you climb.

Who gets Credit

This is one of my favorite fortunes, so crumpled because I carried it around a long time. “When you don’t care who gets the credit, there’s no limit to how high you can climb.” Sounds like great advice, doesn’t it? Would you believe advice this good can be found in a Fortune Cookie?

Well, it’s actually a twist on something Harry Truman once said. Truman said, “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” And he’s right, as is the fortune in your cookie. It’s great advice that we all need to follow.

What does it mean? It’s simple, really. When you do the work for the work’s sake, when you do your best just to do your best, you get more satisfaction and people notice.

Leave your ego at the door and good things will follow.

Effective Leaders

Old school leaders are those with a ‘take charge’ attitude; those who give orders and expect others to follow. Those leaders take pleasure in getting credit for their work (and often they even take credit for the work of their teams). These leaders don’t relish criticism, and prefer their own self-judgement.

And while it is important to have a healthy ego to be a leader, today’s leader needs to have a better idea of how to limit his or her ego and emotional intelligence. They need to handle criticism and they know that the success of their organization doesn’t rest on their shoulders alone, but on the shoulders of their entire team.

These leaders want to work together, with their teams, and they always share credit or pass on credit for a job well done.

Are you part of the old guard, or the new? Become one of the new guard. Stop focusing on who gets the credit, focus on the greater good of the team and organization and see how high you can climb.

Achieve Great Things

You will forge onward and achieve great things

Achieve Great Things

If your fortune cookie’s fortune tells you that “You will forge onward and achieve great things”, believe it! We can all move forward and make great things happen, we just have to believe we can.

Achieving great things is all about hard work and determination. It’s also about planning and setting goals. One way to achieve great things is to work as a team. Planning things together, organizing, setting goals; coming together, working together, we always achieve more.

Teamwork

Working together on a team can help you develop your company’s vision; and if you lead that company, working with your team can help you not only connect with your employees but develop a more well-rounded approach to problem solving. Getting more input, more ideas, can be great for morale and for your company’s bottom line!

Bringing colleagues together can increase their contributions, generate trust; often collaboration & trust is a great motivator.

Look around you. Everyone you work with does something well, and bringing all of those skills together can help us meet new goals. It doesn’t matter whose name is at the top of the letterhead, when we work together we can accomplish amazing things. Everyone matters.

Develop Your Team

At Lead Coach Mentor we have designed a blended approach to help you develop your team and achieve more. We apply both formal and social learning techniques to help your team grow. We will provide you with a plan that will keep your team growing even after coaching ends.

Let’s talk about using the Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team; We want to help you, and your team, move forward and achieve great things!
